Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI v Ealing VI on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 6 Wickets

Match report “Come friendly bombs and fall on Durdans Park, it’s not fit for this cricket lark” is the start of a famous John Betjeman poem. Ok so some of the words have been changed but it proved quite a contrast to the venue my son played at the following morning. There we were amongst the rolling Chiltern Hills. Here you sensed the only rolling was being carried out by those preparing a spliff! Still the changing rooms and showers are new although the pitch somehow had a damp sandy look to it. Ealing are at the foot of the table but Kabir still felt obliged to put them in. The oppo were basically two adults plus nine youngsters who presumably paid their match fees using their Go Henry cards!

Kabir and Mehaffy took the new ball and neither opener looked in a great deal of trouble. In fact one of them, who was 12, treated Nathan with a fair degree of contempt. To be fair Nathan he is a talented 12 year old so don’t have nightmares! The breakthrough came when Kush’s throw from the outfield turned a seemingly comfortable two into a run out. Their number 3 then came in and favoured the aerial route. We dropped him a couple of times as they pushed the score onto 74-1 and seemingly well set. Enter the Smithinator, cue mayhem! What a strange season this has been with monstrous hauls most weeks. Last time out Smithy picked up an 8 for and he only went and done it again. How? It’s a mystery really. Like how did Chesney Hawkes get to number one with The One and Only. How did Rocky Balboa beat Ivan Drago? Smithy by his own admittance trundled in and just kept taking wickets. All but one were caught so he was well supported in the field. The stand out catch was by stand in skipper Kabir who took a one handed diving effort at square leg. He looked more surprised than us! Smithy was on for a 9 for until Saurabh came on and took the last one with a half tracker that clipped the top of the stumps and with that Ealing were bowled out for 125.

Katie and Billy opened up and I have to say considering they have often batted together, the running between the wickets was dodgy. Still they managed to take the score to 41 before Billy was bowled by another one that kept a bit low when attempting the trade mark “rubbish to the square leg umpire “ shot. Cris Hurst played some nice drives before playing over a full ball and Katie got out just as she was clicking into gear. Nathan Glover, AKA the Superior Nathan, looked good in his brief innings before Saurabh decided he didn’t want to hang around Durdans Park longer than he had to smashing 29 off 19 balls with 5 x 4s and a 6. A nice early finish and 10 points to the total. Text book. If we can just keep Thistlethwaite in Portugal for a few more weeks the 5s have a real shot at promotion!

Man of the match is a pretty straight forward one but Smithy has done the double this week as he also picks up Schlong de la Jour. At a drinks break he was umpiring and decided he needed to empty the bladder. He proceeded to head toward the bushes on the far side of the ground despite the new facilities, including toilets, being much closer! That’s enough from me as I’ve got to put a new table together. Looking a bit tricky this one, might need to call Flat Pack Billy!
