Match report Old Actonians’ Third team made up for disappointment in the opening fixture of the 1987 League season with a confident victory over Acton 4’s at the Durston School Ground.
Bowling first after winning the toss, Old A’s quicks Shaun Qamar (3-23) and the unlucky Tom Gilmour (0-43) kept Acton’s top order quiet, aided by a damp and helpful pitch.
But all-rounder Steve Swann did the damage. His nagging medium-pace wrapped up the Acton innings with 4-18, helped by excellent catches from veterans Kevin Mahoney and Dominic Wallace, leaving Old A’s with a stiff target of 198.
Despite a misbehaving track with the ball ‘popping’ through the top surface, openers Julian Rendell (42) and Swann (70 not out) got the innings off to a dream start.
A typically belligerent knock by Asif Qamar (75) kept up the momentum as Old A’s surged to a seven-wicket win, the first for new captain Gilmour.
