Harrow 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 12 Aug 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 120 runs
Match report
After last weeks rip roaring win over Osterley the 3s took the relatively short trip to struggling Harrow as they continued their promotion quest. Chas put himself forward as an early Schlong de la Jour candidate by forgetting he had agreed to give a lift from the club, but we just about managed to get everyone there for the start. The Stud lost his 3rd toss in a row and we were inserted. Tom Whear opened the batting with Andrew to provide an all cack handed affair and we got off to a steady start mainly thanks to extras. Andrew looked to be striking it nicely until he was well caught at square leg to leave us 26 for 1. Tom followed soon after trying to force one that was not really quite there but Chas dug in to ensure our run rate was kept at around 4 an over. Abhay looked in good touch until he missed a straight one and when Chas fell to the 13 year old for 35, we were 105 for 4in the 26th over.
By this stage Huggy was starting to go through the gears at the other end. He shared 50 partnerships with Josh and the Gurk who both supported him sensibly. With 7 4s and 7 6s in a great knock of 95 he ensured we were going to post a total likely to be too much for Harrow. We sailed past 200 in the 38th over and all that was left was for the VC to come in a provide a testosterone filled cameo of raw power! The penultimate ball of the innings was bullied to the boundary behind square leg, and the last ball sailed over Gurkin Corner for my first maximum for the club. It didn't just clear the ropes though. Oh no. It cleared the boundary by a good 3 feet! My teammates watched in awe/amazement/shock. Delete as appropriate! It was perhaps my response to the umpire who asked me if I was the "other umpire" in the car park when I arrived. Still life in the old dog yet!
The oppo were clearly in shock at tea as they struggled to chew through their pizza and ice lollies (perhaps an indication of their general age). There was no time for any sort of therapy however as they had to get ready face the deadly duo of Smith and Sivanathan. Now Kier is bowling at a few MPH below what you would describe as express pace but if there is any swing going, he's yer man. He induced a nick to the VC in the opening over and their number 3 managed to find the only fielder on the leg side in front of square in his 2nd over to leave them 5 for 2. A third soon followed but the other opener was striking the ball well at the other end a found someone to stay with him for a while as he brought up his 50 with the score on 66! Once Huggy came on and got him, the wickets started to fall regularly as the game drifted to an inevitable conclusion. The Stud weighed in with 3 wickets and we were close to seeing Andrew bowl when thankfully the Gurk removed the last man. All that remained was to get back to the club to utilise our grey matter in the enjoyable quiz night put on by the girls.
A comfortable win then as we stretched our unbeaten run which goes back to 17th June when we lost to next weeks oppo Winchmore Hill. With Indian Gymkhana losing to Harrow Town, we are now up to third, one point behind Osterley. There are 5 points separating 4 teams in the race for the 2nd promotion spot. Promises to be an exciting finish to the season.
As for Schlong de la Jour, we will gloss over the VC failing to locate the stumps when missing a run out chance and instead focus on the winner, Josh. Kier was attempting splash down in the toilet when Josh asked if he was having a dump. "Not now I'm not" was Kier's response clearly poo blocked by the aforementioned Josh. Uncalled for and a worthy winner I'm sure the readership will agree.
