Match report The 3s welcomed the team we last lost to way back in June to Boddingtons for this crucial promotion clash. Both teams will have looked at the pitch beforehand and it would have been a shock of Smithy turning down a pork pie proportions if the toss winning side chose to bat first. The wicket had a distinctly green tinge to it on the account of grass the length of most outfields on it! It turns out the wicket was cut Friday morning before the rain deluge. The club needs to find a way to get covers on as and when needed. Players can do this in evenings but during day......

Anyway Stud lost his 3rd toss in a row and we were duly inserted. There was a late change to the team with Kier pulling out in the morning after a night on the sauce. A compelling and ultimately winning case for Schlong de la Jour! Josh was his replacement.

Andrew and 2 Metre Charlie were back in tandem at the top of the order and found runs very difficult to come by on this sticky dog of a wicket. Their tall opener in particular was very difficult to score off as his figures showing 10 runs off 9 overs will testify. Only 17 scored off the first 8 overs but these guys knew the importance of wickets in hand. Gradually the runs began to flow with 2 Metre finding his range with a six that must have reached the westbound Piccadilly Line! Andrew was finding his driving boots at the other end and this fine opening stand reached 93 in the 25th over (surpassing their previous best opening stand of the season) before Andrew holed out for 40. Charlie fell in the next over for 47 but with nearly 20 overs remaining we were set fair.

What happened in the next 15 overs is best described as "la dejeuner de la chien". The Hills bowling remained good but we failed to adapt to the wicket in the same way as the openers and the rest of the innings was a bit of a procession. Only Josh can be excused as he got one that kept low and pretty much walked as Richard raised the finger for LBW. 125 all out in 41.1 overs with all 10 wickets going down for 32 runs in 16 overs.

We went in to tea a bit shell shocked but at least we had a Karen feast to provide some nutritional therapy! Stud rallied the troops and we were ready to make the Hill fight every inch of the way. Nathan shared the new ball with Piri and the latter struck in the 2nd over as the VC snaffled a lovely thick nick. The next partnership gritted it out and took the score to 42 before their number 3 dragged one on off Piri for his 2nd wicket. TP and Lord Whear replaced the openers and carried on the good work by ripping through their middle order with 5 wickets between them. TP was a constant threat during his spell and the Chairman produced the ball of the day to bowl their number 5 with one that just nipped away and hit the top of off stump. At 73 for 7 we must have been favourites to win but the Hill had a wiley old campaigner at number 7 who ultimately played the match winning innings. With partners running out he started to land some lusty blows to start to turn the game their way. The score moved to 104 for 7 when Josh ran out their number 9 who would have made his ground comfortably had he bothered to ground his bat rather than cradling it like a new born!

However that was to prove our last wicket as we grounded a couple of chances that would have set up the ultimate grandstand finish. A great effort by our bowlers to rescue this game and we at least had the consolation of picking up 2 points for taking 8 wickets. It was a shame we wasted what I would consider our best partnership of the season (taking into consideration the pitch, quality of the bowling and importance of the match) by Andrew and Charlie but we did give them one hell of a fight. We are now 4th needing Harrow Town to lose to Hampstead this week and for the Hill to do us a favour on the last day at Indian Gymkhana while winning our last two. Skipper away this week but my dictatorial style with a touch of menace should ensure there is no complacency against Bessborough this week,
