Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Harrow Town 3 on Sat 19 May 2018 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 45 runs

Match report With the skipper immersed in the luvvie world of the West End, the 3s we’re back at Boddingtons this week to take on a Harrow Town side who it turned out were unbeaten in 13 games going back to mid season last year. The ground looked in excellent order but we were informed the roller had not been working so how was this pitch going to play? It looked ok but this is Boddingtons........... Anyway the toss was lost and Towns’ s skipper was at a loss as to what to do. In the end he opted to bowl and we were not too unhappy to be batting on what was a warm afternoon.

The old firm of 2 Metre and Arkwright opened up and it became clear early on that there was a bit more pace than usual in the wicket and a bit more bounce too. Andrew fell early when he managed to nick off to their dobber to the slips in the 2nd over which brought out Idris to join Charlie. He smoked his first ball off the back foot through extra cover and that set the tone for the innings. Both punished anything loose and their partnership of 87 came at about a run a ball. However both fell with the score on 89 so a rebuilding job was needed by Asif and Mr TFC, Sameer. While Asif bided his time Sameer, without his long johns, quickly hit his straps. Using the sweep against their spinners to great effect he hit 10 boundaries in his innings of 54 as his partnership with Asif gleaned 102. Chaz came in after Sameer’s dismissal and he and lower order did just enough to get us up to that 250 mark.

We knew the game was far from won however with Harrow having notched over 300 in their first game this season. Piri and Shaun opened the bowling and there were some close calls early on. Piri did strike with the score on 30 when their left hander chased a wide one and got a faint nick to the C (had to drop the V this week for obvious reasons). A threatening partnership then developed with both batters playing aggressively without too many alarms. At 63 for 1 Harrow were up with the rate and well in contention but 3 quick wickets put us firmly in control. Piri bowled the other opener before Sahil got into the act. First he caught and bowled their number 4 before he knocked the number 5s middle stump out of the ground 2 balls later.

Harrow Town would not buckle however as their keeper came in at 6 and played a sensible knock to support the number 3 who started to hit 6s for fun over long on and mid wicket. They took the score to 117 when the 3 bat gave Huggy a sharp caught and bowled chance which he duly accepted. Another partnership developed as we tried various bowling options. At 182 for 5 were Harrow going to pull this one out of the fire? Not on my watch they weren’t! Up stepped Tommy Byrne who serves up more floaters than your average Glastonbury toilet! First he persuaded their keeper to hold out to Sameer at cow corner, he then enticed a catch to Huggy at long on, before mesmerising another into swatting a full pie to Chaz behind square on the leg side. The returning Shaun bowled their number 10 before their skipper played all round one to give the Mr Flight and Guile his 4th victim as Harrow fell away to get bowled out for 206.

A really satisfying win against a team that will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. Set up by the top order a score of 251 was always going to be a challenging but not impossible target with the speed of the outfield and considering how well the wicket did actually play. The difference between the sides ultimately was the fielding. Obviously having Chaz backed helped enormously in this respect! Seriously though it was a very committed effort in the field which bodes well for the rest of the season. Good to see we are building on what was a successful and enjoyable season last year.

Schlong de la jour? Got to be Chaz for a chirp at the umpire after a wide call.......from his position at extra cover! On to Winchmore Hill next week who deprived us of promotion last season. I think we might owe them one chaps.......
