Actonians Cricket Club Won By 102 runs

Match report The 3s made the long trek to Winchmore Hill this week looking to extend their unbeaten start to the season. Since their relegation from the County league we had failed to beat the Hill on our 4 previous attempts but having got 250 at Boddingtons the week before, the 3s were looking forward to playing on one of the best pitches in our division. Having inserted them last season on a boiling hot day and enjoyed over 3 hours of chasing leather, we implored the returning skipper to call correctly and have a bat. This he duly did (he’s now 3 out of 3!), much to the delight of our fasting players too.

As 2 Metre and Arkwright prepared to stride out to the middle, it transpired the Hill were starting with 9 with 1 on their way but another unlikely to appear. Despite the numerical shortfall, the odd couple had to show patience as their new ball pair both bowled well and offered little in the form of easy pickings. Andrew to however achieve a first in his career by forcing the oppo to have someone sweeping square on the offside boundary! You can teach and old dog new tricks it seems...... Anyway they managed to bring up their first 50 partnership of the season and Charlie was just starting to go through the gears when he was caught off their young spinner when trying to play too square. We then lost Andrew without any addition to the score when he was caught at slip (shock horror!) so Idris and Asif had a rebuilding job to do. Both knocked it around sensibly capitalising on any loose stuff. Idris was stumped for 38 but not before they had put on 84 for the 3rd wicket and had given us the opportunity to have a good old fashioned flay in the closing overs. First to “flay “ was Chaz who hit 5 boundaries in his cameo of 22 and then Shahid played a great knock at the end of 32 as he helped Asif score 91 runs in the last 9 overs! As for Asif himself well what can I say? He somehow musters reserves of energy from somewhere despite fasting on what was a very warm afternoon. Combining the odd nerdle with explosive bottom handed power, Asif brought up his hundred in the penultimate over and ended up unbeaten on 106. We ended up with a very imposing 259 but it was a good track and there was still work to do.

The skipper took the new ball with Shaun and after a couple of tidy overs the Hill’s openers started to show their intent as boundaries started to flow. Shaun got the breakthrough when he won a LBW decision and a run out soon followed when Shahid threw down the stumps from mid on. This brought in their number 4 whose innings went 4, 6, dot, 6, W all in a Shaun over. His demise came as he swatted a slightly wide delivery straight to Chaz at cover who thankfully had no time to think about it! 2 Metre then held onto a smart low catch when he did well to stoop 1 Metre 98 centimetres! That made the score 54 for 4 and the Hill had a mountain to climb......so to speak. One of their openers continued to play well despite seeing partners come and go but their keeper did stick around for a while as they took the score to 97 before Taz, on debut, snared him leg before. Idris then facilitated another run out (this meant the opener had run out the father and the son playing for them) before that man, Huggy Bear, came on to wrap up the innings claiming the scalp of their opener whose vigil came to an end on 79.

So in the end a comfortable margin of victory but we worked hard for it particularly when we batted. To be fair to the oppo they were hampered by the late drop outs and their bowling options were limited. That said you can only beat what is put in front of you and the 3s are starting to build momentum.

Schlong de la Jour? Difficult one this week as there was a shortage of daftness. Previous visits to the Hill have provided us with Smithy throwing his phone on a concrete path and Chaz asking Dave Wear if he had spare cricket pants!! Nothing on that scale to report but it will have to go to...........the Liverpool goalkeeper!!!! Onwards then to the visit of the Tamils next week.
