Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v SKLP 3 on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 2 wickets

Match report With a combination of Glastonbury, cricket World Cup, weddings and pedicure appointments causing all sorts of availability issues for the club, the 3s showed just the 9 changes from last weeks game at Wycombe House. Only Rohit and Shahid played last week. VC returned in the role as C, there were 3rd team debuts for Alex, Zain and Archie with call ups for Smithy, Will, Malik, Jonesy and Sam. SKLP were the visitors to Boddingtons who were just a few points ahead of us but they had beaten the top side this season.

I popped into the club first to get a taste of Patrick’s customer service skills (straight from the Basil Fawlty text book) and then it was over to Bodders for the toss. Their skipper called incorrectly and I ignored Nathan’s What’s App message and decided to bat first in the 30+ degree heat. A great way to instantly get your team mates on board! Corporal Jones and Sam Boughton opened the batting and we knew we were up against keen oppo as some of them started practising an hour before the start! As it turned out the opening bowler struggled for line but his new ball partner up the slope proved a real handful. He trapped Sam LBW and just as Jonesy was doing a decent impression of Brigadier Block, he called for an ambitious bye and was easily run out after being sent back by Shahid. Shahid himself was looking good but when he was castled we were 35 for 3. Rocket Ronit, still fuelled with the previous nights alcohol, came out to join Malik and these two certainly got the scoreboard going. When Malik was caught at 3rd man Zain came out to join Ronit. The partnership was threatening to blossom into something significant but both got out to airy shots in the same over to leave us 92 for 6. Time to rebuild. I went out to join Will and although it was a bit Dogs of War, Backs to the Wall batting, we did edge the score forward to 126 at the 2nd drinks break (30 overs). So hopes were still there to post a decent total. Well as they always say, there is always 4 wickets for 4 runs after a drinks break!!! 130 all out then.

After an ok club tea I decided against a rousing Churchillian speech and went more for your Sargeant Wilson “let’s go out there and jolly well do our best” pep talk. SB and AB took the new ball and not for the first time this season young Sam went unrewarded despite some unplayable nuts. At the other end Alex took 3 overs to settle but once she found her radar, the wickets started to tumble. Their opener was bowled by one that nipped back and just clipped the leg stump, the number 3 got done by an inswinger that moved away and knocked back off, and another two wickets went down courtesy of bucket hands Boughton. At the other end Smithy managed a remarkable 15 over spell in the searing heat. He then set about cleaning up their middle order with 4 wickets of his own. SKLP were 40 without loss but collapsed to 86 for 7. To be fair to their number 9 he played a sensible and match winning knock of 31 which saw them home with the 8th wicket falling with only 5 needed.

A narrow defeat then for the 3s but bearing in mind the changes to the side this week, a great effort. A very good game of cricket played in a good spirit and the team made my job as captain as painless as it can be. Ultimately we did not quite bat well enough but the performance in the field was as good as any produced by the 3s this season. Plenty of commitment in the field which supported the bowlers all of whom bowled well enough to have taken wickets. Encouraging spells from young guns Sam and Archie but the honours must go to Alex and Smithy for 4 wickets a piece. Both bowled long spells with Smithy claiming he has amazing stamina when it comes to bowling and errrr something else. He then asked if 3 minutes was a long time!

Schlong de la Jour? Has to go to my VC for the day Will Yates. I can see why the KGB didn’t recruit him at Oxford. Before he went out to start the umpiring he asked if he looked ok in his red t-shirt. I reassured him on that front but pointed out the fact he should probably be more concerned about the socks and sandals combo he was displaying!
