Teddington IV v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 12.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 6 Wickets
Match report
.This week the mighty 4s rocked up in Bushy Park to take on a side who beat us comfortably earlier in the season, Teddington. Not played here for a few seasons so was impressed with their new swanky £2M pavilion complete with private car park. However the gravelly nature of the car park made it difficult to drag my heavy bag so marks off for that! Jonesy won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a decent track and lightning fast outfield.
The Big Show opened up with me and when he smashed a half tracker to the boundary third ball all seemed well and tickety boo. However this was a precursor for carnage that ensued in the next nine deliveries as we lost 4 wickets for 2 runs! Firstly Aneeq missed a high loopy full toss and was adjudged LBW. First ball of the 2nd over, I thumped a ball that was asking to be hit straight to gully. Malik got cleaned up 2nd ball and Ronit bunted a return catch to the bowler 1st ball. It was then down to the erudite pairing of William Fortescue Yates and Lord Whear to start our recovery. They indeed led us to the relatively healthy score of 39 before the Chairman was castled. Will then started to play some customary classy drives before he too was unable to keep out a straight one. At 65 for 6 our score was starting to resemble our effort with the bat last week but TP, who may run like he has had few, certainly did not bat like he’d had a few! After a slow but sensible start, he started to unleash some lusty blows, particularly over wide mid on, to dominate a seventh wicket partnership of 49 with Corporal Jones. Jonesy only made 2 before he was very unlucky to be given LBW when he got an inside edge that we could hear 70 yards away. Still he had helped give us a chance of posting a decent total. Asad could not repeat last weeks heroics but Aylon came in at 10 and joined in the fun as both he and TP put on 46 for the 9th wicket finding the boundary on a regular basis. TP brought up his half century but just as we were contemplating a total upward of 200, both got out in successive balls to give Teddington a target of 183. A real topsy turvey innings complete with interesting and contrasting observations from the sidelines. Will was very wordy with his, using lots of long words inducing a puzzled look on Lord Whears face. Smithy offered his view that the bowler rolling us over was dog sh*t!
Teddington’s openers got off to a flying start punishing anything off line or short or too full. Bowling into a strong breeze from one end proved very challenging but we struggled to apply any sort of pressure. They put on 114 for the first wicket before Asad struck. Aylon removed the other opener before Asad struck again thanks to a great one handed grab by Malik in the gully to leave them 128 for 3. Just a glimmer maybe but although we did pick up one more, they ran out comfortable winners with 14 overs to spare.
Beaten by a strong side then but clearly our catastrophic start ultimately was our undoing. TP has to be man of the match for his excellent half century. Schlong de la Jour to the Big Show for claiming the credit for our recovery because he bowled to TP and Aylon in the nets!
