Actonians Cricket Club Won by 77 runs

Match report The 4s first reverse fixture of the season so us trek down to East Molesey to play Twickenham at Hurst Recreation Ground. On arrival it looked very brown and uninviting just like many grounds at the present but with no facilities apart from the use of the disabled toilet at the adjacent swimming pool! At least there were some trees to enable the batting side to seek solace from the debilitating heat. The game started 45 minutes late as we had to wait for the stumps and the oppo surprisingly decided to bowl first. Perhaps because they have chased successfully a couple of times recently.

Ali opened the batting with Robbo who was playing his last game as a “free man” and the latter took advantage of some lose balls early on. Unfortunately Ali fell cheaply to their skipper, Harmi, who was to bowl a marathon 20 over stint. This brought in 2 Metre Charlie who had asked for a home game this week. Luckily he has never been to East Molesey before and was compelled to answer the call from Roheet in the affirmative! These two really got the scoreboard ticking as Twickenham struggled to stem the flow. They put on just over a hundred before 2 Metre fell just short of his half century. Archie then came in for his first knock of the season and looked pretty assured. So much so that I decided to go for a slash despite being next in and put Ronit on standby in case a wicket fell. Wouldn’t you know, Archie did get out and Ronit went in at five. As it turned out Rocket Ronit was on it today and blazed the ball to the boundary with consummate ease. My slash will go down in Actonians history alongside Badgers prolonged drinks break at Hampstead Heath last season when he couldn’t find Bobby Uberoi’s car which lead to the Preston Murali’s seven for! Robbo completed his half century before he got out but he had help build a great platform. Ronit’s knock gave us impetus at the end as the skipper made a bold declaration after 41 overs with the score on 234.

Fair play to Twickenham for supplying a tea despite no facilities but we took to the field determined to bowl them out. Not just to take the 12 points but a Mrs Hussain curry was waiting for us at the club! Ali donned the gauntlets which I had mixed feelings about. The wicket offered some sharp bounce off a length that would have made keeping interesting. On the other hand it meant I didn’t have to field near Robbo and his irritable bowel! 2 guys making their 4s debut opened the bowling. Nick Jackson and Kush Sheth. Both bowled well but both openers seemed intent on putting bat to ball but with the score on 38 Kush got one of them to play on. At 60 for 1 off 10 the skipper decided to bring himself and Lord Whear on and from there the game started to get away from Twickenham as they took 8 wickets between them. Their batsmen obligingly kept finding our youthful and athletic fielders when giving droppable catches. Archie, Srodders and myself! They soon slipped to 115 for 9 before their last pair had a bit of fun and biffed the score over the 150 mark. Kush then came back on and took the final wicket as their skipper got one that bounced on him and he offered a catch to Nick in the gully.

A pretty comprehensive win in the end as the 4s, despite being in 4th place, find themselves only 4 points off the joint leaders. That’s a lot of fours. So everything to play for with 8 games to go in what is a very tight division. Man of the match? I’m edging to Robbo as it was not a good wicket. Both Lord Whear and Slowheet got balls to bounce steeply off a good length which says it alll. That said they both exploited the conditions well. Schlong de la Jour goes to Srodders for his pre match chunder. At least he caught the initial outpourings with his hands as the skipper released the child lock and opened the door to Nick’s car. The pavement then took care of the rest.
