London Tigers III v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 20 May 2023 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 59
Match report
The Tigers had come up last year from the 5s league and reports suggested that they were pretty expert on their artificial home ground. When we arrived we could see how the pitch would require a slightly different approach, quite literally for the bowlers who would have to navigate somewhat of a crater on their way to the crease.
Despite these difficulties and their groundskeeper insistence of trying to repair the outfield whilst the game was in progress we set about the challenge with our usual resolve and only minimal moaning.
Batting first saw a couple of lusty blows from Ben that painted a picture of a beautifully paced Astro deck that proved deceptive. We lost the top four in quick order to see us rocking at 30/4. However the moment called for the fours dynamic duo; Rakesh who loves nothing better than to bully bowling attacks and me who likes nothing better than to stand at the non-strikers end whilst Rakesh bullies bowling attacks. We proved the strength of our middle order engine by both getting into the twenties with the skipper also coming in and knocking the ball about to get us to a respectable if a little below par 147.
Although we felt we were a little behind the eight ball we were definitely still in the game. Nothing prepared us for the most complete bowling performance the fours have shown for many years (and Roheet also bowled).
Omer and Kit basically bullied tigers in response giving them nowhere to go on a deck that offered pace and bounce and a lush outfield that keep the ball swinging deep into the innings. Saoirse, who is no slouch, looked pretty pedestrian compared to the fire that was served up by the fours Walsh and Ambrose. Poor old Roheet, who bowled with his customary precision and guile, looked like a relic from a bygone age. A man still bowling fax machines in the iphone era.
In spite of this transformation of the fours into an all action bullying fast bowling unit we still managed our mid innings drops to turn in a fielding performance that was classic fours. As the experienced pros of the team were treating the ball like a bar of soap, Ben proved the children are the future with two catches and a throw which saw him run a player out trying to steal a two to him in the outfield.
Even though it was not quite a perfect performance - with the need to sharpen up the batting and most of our catching - it was incredibly satisfying to defend a total with such intensity. Onto to Harrow St Mary’s!
