Ealing V v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 15 Jul 2023 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 90
Match report
After a false start to the second half of the season, the Fours were up for a battle to secure their place at the top of the table. On arrival, the battle was made all the more interesting by the presence in the opposition line-up of two students of the two teachers in the team.
Losing the toss and being put in to bat forced the hand of the 4s to go for the full twelve points on offer from the game and Saoirse and Zain opened up superbly on a very damp pitch. It didn't take long for Zain to get into his flow and his 29 came off 28 balls, including three fours across an outfield that was less than helpful. After his departure, Saoirse took control of the opposition bowling, accruing a chanceless 65 in a second-wicket partnership of 81 with Arjuna. Sandeep came in at six and relished the bowling on offer, getting off the mark with a straight six and finishing 50 not out off 30 balls, including four sixes and three fours. The declaration came at the end of the 46th over with 263 on the board.
With no chance of a winning draw, Ealing set out their stall immediately, swinging fast and loose and moving quickly to an opening stand of 48. Nathan then drew first blood, clean bowling one of the openers. Nathan finished with 3-28 off his seven overs, picking up batters 1, 2 and 3 as his victims. This brought the two U13s to the crease and with them Roheet and Ali into the attack. Who better to work out the youngsters than the youth development officer and one of the teachers. Ali was the first to claim a wicket when his own charge went on the attack, holing out to Saoirse at deep extra cover. Roheet had his victim shortly after and, to sweeten the moment, Joe (the batter's teacher) took the catch. After a couple more wickets fell, one Ealing player started playing the hero with a vast array of ariel leg-side shots that failed to find the fielders. It took only a few balls from Arjuna to unseat him, however, and the look of despair on his face suggested he was the last hope of the team. Sure enough, the game was over with only five further runs gained by the opposition, Arjuna and Will claiming the final two wickets.
The win puts the Fours thirteen points clear at the top of the table with great momentum going into next Saturday's home game vs the London Tigers.
