Scorecard

West Harrow III v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 28 May 2022 at 12.30pm
Match was Tied Overs - Even Draw/Tie

Match report The 4s have had a slightly disappointing start to the season and this week we found ourselves away to the league leaders, West Harrow. The venue was Kingsbury High School and on arrival it looked a pleasant enough place for a game of cricket. Outfield could have done with a cut and the wicket felt a bit bumpy when walked on. Definitely a win the toss and stick em in as this was not going to be a very high scoring game. Roheet called correctly and did the necessary.

The skipper took the new ball with Omar and it soon became clear that batsmen were going to have to work hard for their runs. Roheet struck first bowling one of their openers before Rut held a fine low catch to dismiss their useful looking number 3 off Raj. Omar changed ends and go the other opener and with Rut taking another fine catch off RJ, West Harrow we’re 43 for 4. That brought in their powerfully built number 6 who soon made his intentions clear with some lusty blows mainly straight. While he got the score going we managed to pick up wickets regularly at the other end. Will came on and bowled one of his best spells in recent times and like RJ was clearly not intending to use any flight and guile! The number 6 eventually fell for 63 when he top edged a pull of RJ to me at deep fine leg. An indication of the speed RJs darts where being bowled at! Apparently the batsmen told his partner “he’s not catching that……”. They ended up with 164 which was a half decent score on that pitch and the fact that no other batsman scored more than 16 put it into perspective. RJ ended up with 4 wickets with all the other bowlers chipping in. Rut with 3 fine catches on debut also played his part.

We began our reply after tea (well done to West Harrow for making one) with 2 of the 4 Andrew’s taking guard. Maben and MS Jonesy were given the task of building the foundation. One of their openers got it through sharply but erratically off a short run while the other looked like he’d be better off bowling off an oche! Maben looked in decent touch again after a couple of trademark boundaries before he was bowled trying to pull a half tracker that just never got as high as it should. We found ourselves 36 for 2 when Jonesy was run out following a mix up with RJ. The latter was however getting the scoreboard moving with some typical blows. Rut soon departed but Will looked his usual positive self on arrival at the crease.

RJ’s belligerent knock ended on 29 to leave us 68 for 4 with the game very much in the balance. I came out to join Will at this point and it’s fair to say scoring was much easier at the end the left arm spinner wasn’t bowling. With his height he was getting the odd one to turn and or bounce every now and then so it was important when continued to bat with reasonable intent. We moved the score to 95 before my attempted drive over extra cover ballooned somewhat. H “I’m 40 you know” Patel joined Will and he got off to a flier before he pulled a calf that meant he had to retire hurt. Another debutant, Andrew G, replaced him and he offered good support to Will who hit a majestic straight 6 on his way to scoring 37. Alas he got caught on the long on boundary attempting another leaving us 141 for 6 and Andrew G got one that bounced off their spinner next ball to be caught at slip. 141 for 7 with H somewhat incapacitated and still 24 needed. Omar and Raj were now together and they chipped away at the required total. Before we knew it the scores were tied with 3 wickets still in the hutch. Their slippery opening bowler came back on and induced Raj to edge behind. Next ball H hobbled out to the middle but he could only spoon one up to cover unable to put much weigh on his injury. The skipper managed to survive the rest of the over leaving Omar to face the start of the next over. First ball…..bowled and that was it. A tie! The oppo were duly jubilant and for us, well it felt like a defeat.

In the cold light of day it has to go down as a pretty good performance against one of the stronger teams in this division. Bowling was generally tight (although the wide count still needs to be reduced) and some excellent catches were taken. The batting was actually a pretty good collective effort that ultimately just fell short.

Man of the match has to go to RJ for his all round performance (never thought I’d say that!) with Will also having a pressing claim. Schlong de la jour also goes to RJ for his ridiculous skater boy garb he was wearing after the game. Presumably he mugged a 13 year old because it did look a bit big for him!
