Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Harrow IV on Sat 11 May 2024 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
After last season’s anti-climactic washed out start, it was a joy to see the sun shining on Boddington for 2024’s opening weekend. Seeing a hard pitch and knowing Boddington’s propensity for dulling a chase, Ali threw the team into bat after winning the toss.
Onlookers could be forgiven for criticising the captain’s decision when, at 17-5, the team looked in a bit of bother. However, Joe Chugg, making his return to the club after a wedding-demolished 2023 season (friends’ weddings, I hastily add), took the responsibility for the team and played a cultured array of strokes for his 67 runs. He and Rakesh (29) put on 90 runs for the 6th wicket, helping Actonians reach a sturdy 137 on a wicket that gave little value for the batters.
Following a lovely Chloe-prepared tea including a delicious Greek salad, chocolate Hobnobs and copious amounts of egg sandwiches (not in that order), Actonians took the field.
If I tell you that the opener for Harrow seemed to have been watching a different game for the first half, I might give you a clue as to how he played his two overs. Prior to the match, the longest 6 ever hit was 560 miles, after Jimmy Sinclair's shot landed on a goods train bound for Port Elizabeth. We don't know for certain if that record has been broken, but the opener donated 2 balls to the Picadilly Line which may be on the tracks, in the siding or making their way around Central and West London. 22 off 7 balls was definitely worth his overnight flight back from the T20 competition in Dubai.
Mercifully, he played one short too many off Nathan and his wicked was snaffled by David at mid off.
Nathan claimed a trio of wickets as his bowling returned to the usual ‘can’t get it off the ruddy square’ standard. Frustrated batsmen picked out Ali and Max for his second and third wickets.
Khush opened up from the other end and saw success in well-placed boundary rider Rory Daly who ate up a hoik from the other opener. The batter’s claim of not having seen him seems inexcusable given towering Rory’s stature.
Luke D’Mello marked his 4th Team league debut with a wicket following a great spell of bowling that made the most of the swing and lift from his easy-going action. Fan-favourite chant ‘They Call Me Luke D’Mello’ (to the tune of Mellow Yellow by Donovan) is a perfect partner to his delivery stride.
With a stand from the opposing captain (who the team feel really should have walked after what looked and sounded like a clear nick) and their number 4 vexing the Actonians, Rakesh was called on to break the partnership.
And he did! It took him until his second over to get his first and his third for the next. The second of his wickets was incredibly satisfying as, prior to bowling the first ball of the over, he declared to the batter (and before 14 other witnesses) ‘I’m going to get you this over’ before pouching a caught and bowled on that very ball.
Some classy batting from Harrow’s number 9 carried them home, but after the loss of early wickets, the repair job by Joe and Rakesh made the loss seem less disappointing.
Nevertheless, Actonians 4’s will look to improve as they take on league-favourites Old Isleworthians next week.
Man of the Match was Joe Chugg for his heroic 67 and saving about as many runs in wides and byes behind the stumps.
