Match report On a grey, moist morning, standing over a ridged and suspiciously brown pitch, it would have been nice to win the toss. Sadly, it wasn’t the case and Actonians were put into bat.

The pitch and conditions lived up to their promise, with numerous balls shooting along the ground to the keeper, blessedly missing the stumps. Robbo and David pushed on, however. Looking for every hard-fought run until David was felled by the sticky wicket, chipping the ball to mid-off.

Hitesh attempted to keep the ship going, playing beautifully timed drives around the park but always seeming to find the fielders who could stop the ball. His 9 runs don’t speak for the grit of their 10-over partnership. Unfortunately, just as Robbo was finding the pace of the wicket, having just struck the match’s first boundary, he fell to a corker of a delivery that nipped back from 5th stump to take top of off. It was going to be a tough day, it seemed.

After Robbo’s dismissal, 4’s debutant Siddhant Mahajan came to the crease. Doggedly, he and H prevented another wicket falling, keeping out some bowling that wouldn’t have seemed out of place in the 2’s league.

That was until Max Lovelock strode to the crease and decided he was playing on a different wicket against a different set of bowlers all-together. Timing some lovely strokes around the ground and putting the fielders to work running multiple 2’s on the long outfield, he and Sid put on 30 for the 4th wicket and turned the momentum in Actonians’ favour.

After a brief but intent-driven appearance from Rakesh, Ali and Sid continued the momentum with their own 30-run partnership, striking a few boundaries on a field that was starting to look disconcertingly dry. Sandeep Khamb, making his return to Actonians took full advantage scoring 12 at more than a run a ball. Sid finished with 20 to his name.

The 4’s survived their first full 45-overs, exceeding last week’s effort by one ball, with Luke D’Mello and Khush Sheth getting the red-inkers. A highlight of their partnership was Luke calling Khush through for one to the keeper… who was stood up.

After a fantastic Cost-Co tea (how do they have both the cheapest and best cookies in the world?), Sandeep opened the bowling and all the fielders (with the possible exception of Ali behind the stumps) were pleased to see the wicket hadn’t entirely dried up. Ball after ball shot through at ankle height, and it was ironic that the only one to lift rapped the opening bat on his back leg and was given out LBW. Sandeep picked up two good wickets from his opening spell.

Mehaffy opened at the other end and was his usual frustrating self, his deliveries seeming to float to enticing half-volleys before dipping and veering away off a length. The frustration proved fatal for the opener who threw his arms in fury but could only reach Robbo at mid-off for Mehaffy’s first of three wickets. The second was a plumb LBW and the third a stunning over-the-shoulder catch from H.

Khush Sheth bowled a dangerous looking spell but was denied a wicket despite finding the edge of the bat three times and beating it exponentially more. After allegedly being dropped 7-times in last season’s fixture against Old I’s 4’s, he was due some respite; however, the one edge that went near a fielder wouldn’t stick in Ali’s outstretched paw.

Luke’s two spells were wonders to behold, and anyone in line with the stumps would have been astounded into drawing comparisons to Anderson, Broad and McGrath as ball after ball pitched on middle and swerved past the outside edge. It must have been the lucky day of Old I’s as Luke failed to break his 1-wicket curse; however, the one wicket was of the dangerous-looking Nasir whose beefy blows could have finished the game quickly had he not nicked off (or retired hurt due to back strain).

Alas, the bowling was not enough to secure the win and even golden-armed Rakesh couldn’t unseat 7 and 8 who rode their luck to a crushing 4-wicket victory. After a determined effort with the bat and spells of controlled and savvy bowling, the 4’s are forced to take a frustrating loss into Week 3.

Man of the Match was Luke D’Mello as compensation for the cruel lack of wickets from his bowling.
